(Each day we will look at the piece of Scripture from the past week's BH, and help us all apply it to our lives, and to "make it stick".)
Daily Dying Devotion No. 1: STARVING THE RIGHT THING
Our mains Scripture: Luke 9:18-27
vs. 23-24: Then he said to them all: “IF anyone would come after me, he must DENY HIMSELF and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.
Today, the word "DENY".
To "deny", really means to withhold; to refrain from, like when you're fasting from something, whether it be food, or music, or electronic devices, etc, you do not give in to the desire for that thing... you deny it
To deny, really means to "refuse to feed".
It's as-if you FAST from something, so you can FEAST on God.
Jesus tells us that to deny OURSELVES, is the first step in this new life as his disciples. He is saying, in essence, "Do Not Feed" YOUR selfishness, YOUR ego, YOUR pride, YOUR desires.
We live in a culture where everyone wants whatever they want whenever they want it. If it feels good, tastes good, seems right, or the crowd is doing it, most of us don't consider waiting, and we definitely don't think about denying altogether.
But for Jesus to really live within us, we need to stop feeding our will. When we do, when we yield to our desires to Christ's...
OUR SELFISHNESS becomes SELFLESSNESS.
OUR GREED becomes GENEROSITY.
OUR EGO becomes HUMILITY.
OUR PRIDE becomes SACRIFICE.
May you DENY something you want today, so that Jesus can have what he wants in you.
May you starve the right things today.
